The quiz above is a quick way to check your knowledge. Before the interview, prepare a specific example for each of these themes: Patient Safety, 6Cs of Nursing, Safeguarding, Clinical Judgement. Practise saying your answer aloud, then refine the detail, evidence and outcome rather than memorising a script.

  1. Question 1 · 6Cs of Nursing

    An interviewer asks how the 6Cs influence your care. Which approach best demonstrates understanding?

    The 6Cs are a care framework, separate from the NHS Constitution values for England. A real, anonymised example shows how you apply them. You can explain which resonates with you without claiming that the other principles are optional.

  2. Question 2 · Patient Safety

    An adult inpatient's NEWS2 has risen from 3 to 7. What is the safest immediate response?

    This deterioration needs an urgent clinical response. Call for appropriate help without waiting to finish every assessment step; continue care within competence and give a clear handover. Follow the escalation process for the setting. NEWS2 supports rather than replaces clinical judgement.

  3. Question 3 · 6Cs of Nursing

    A colleague is about to move to another patient without required hand hygiene, despite earlier reminders. What should you do?

    Address immediate risk and report the repeated concern promptly. A private conversation is not a prerequisite for escalation. Record facts and follow local reporting procedures; do not wait for further harm.

  4. Question 4 · Safeguarding

    An adult patient discloses domestic abuse and asks you to keep it secret. What is the best initial response?

    Listen without investigating or promising secrecy. Establish immediate safety, involve the person in decisions and record facts. Seek safeguarding advice about proportionate information sharing; obtain emergency help if needed. Neither automatic police referral nor an absolute promise not to contact police fits every situation.

  5. Question 5 · Clinical Judgement

    An adult inpatient is unwell and the team suspects sepsis. Which approach best shows safe nursing judgement?

    Suspected sepsis requires prompt assessment and escalation. NICE guidance differentiates management by risk and clinical circumstances; oxygen and fluids are not identical for every patient. Explain actions within your competence and authorisation, using current guidance and the local pathway.

A simple preparation checklist

  • Choose relevant, truthful examples and explain the outcome and learning. Use numbers only when you have them.
  • Use STAR for experience questions: keep the situation brief and spend most of the answer on what you did.
  • For hypothetical questions, explain proposed actions and reasons. For strengths, answer naturally about what you do well and enjoy; neither needs a forced STAR story.
  • Say each answer out loud, then remove jargon, filler and unnecessary background detail.
  • Prepare one thoughtful question about the role, team or priorities for the end of the interview.
